Trump Death Clock/Saving the Post Office

Award-winning filmmaker, Eugene Jarecki, joins Ralph to talk about the electronic billboard he put up in New York’s Times Square, the “Trump Death Clock.” And Mark Dimondstein, head of the American Postal Workers Union, reminds how the health and safety of postal workers as well as the preservation of the post office is essential for delivering medicines and other vital goods as well as protecting democracy. Plus, listener questions!

Eugene Jarecki is an Emmy and Peabody award-winning director of dramatic and documentary subjects. Mr. Jarecki combines the skills of journalist and poet in his documentaries. His work is motivated by his outrage at corruption, exploitation, and injustice in contemporary life. Mr. Jarecki created the Trump Death Clock which documents the estimated U.S. Covid-19 deaths due to President Trump’s inaction.

“The President is entrusted with the care of the American people. And to defend the nation from threats within and without. And he failed to do that here. He made a political bet that calling it a hoax and playing games with it would serve him well. And as we have now seen in the numbers both in who we’ve lost and in their families who are mourning them. And that it’s all over the country, his supporters as well. It was a bad political bet for which the nation is paying a huge price. So that’s where accountability will lay. It’s the accountability of reckless endangerment that led to reckless manslaughter.”

Eugene Jarecki, creator of The Trump Death Clock

Mark Dimondstein is the President of the American Postal Workers Union. Since 2013 when Mr. Dimondstein was elected, he has turned the APWU into a fighting activist organization. Mr. Dimondstein advocates for the rights of postal workers as well as the right of the American people to a vibrant public Postal Service. The American Postal Workers Union supports Medicare for All and belongs to the Labor Campaign for Single Payer. The APWU believes in paying a living wage and providing benefits to all workers.

“This administration is on record from June 2018 in an Office of Management budget report openly advocating and saying they plan to privatize the public postal service i.e. sell it off to private corporations. A few corporations would benefit and the rest of the people would suffer. Because whether we get mail at all, how often we get it, under what cost and what price would then depend on whether somebody can make a quick buck.”

  1. Don Harris says:

Shame on you Ralph for treating the Trump Death Clock as if it were something to be celebrated.

The premise that some “experts” determined that 60% of the deaths were directly attributable to Trump’s refusal to act is merely looking at one symptom of the underlying problem and trying to make that into the cause of the deaths.

100% of those deaths are also directly attributable to the Democrats refusal to act on getting the big money out of our political process and only offering a false big money alternative to the Republicans for decades. That is why Trump is in office now.

The guest talks a good talk about Bernie and or his supporters demanding better from Biden, but there is one thing citizens can demand of Biden that will mean much more than more of the empty promises the Dems have been making for decades while doing the opposite at the behest of the big money interests- we can demand that Biden run a small donor only campaign in the general election to earn our votes.

Without Biden taking that action any promises made will again be broken.

As I have been trying to get you, Ralph, to inform citizens about how they can work together to make this demand of politicians and enforce it with their votes since 2015 and you have to refused to act or explain why you won’t act and offer citizens this alternative choice after saying on Washington Journal (10-24-2018) that you would have me on the Radio Hour to discuss it a case could be made that you are also partially accountable for the 60% of deaths that could have been avoided.

We need better alternatives and much better experts.

And we need a Big Money DEM Death Clock right next to the Trump Death Clock keeping an equal count.

And we need a Big Money Death Clock that keeps track of all the other deaths over the last several decades that make the pandemic deaths pale in comparison.

    • Jim Brasile says:

All that points Don Harris. Especially the request that, ” Biden run a small donor only campaign in the general election to earn our votes.” Right now Democrates deserve some of the blame as we invest $7billion in CDC and now $738billion to the Pentagon.

    • James mckedrick says:

      Ralph:
Think to the future we know that the President is devoid of the future of the American people..
Therefore deviise a plan with out the president.
      You have leadership use it.
      Planning to the future!!

  2. John Puma says:

The Trump Death Clock, can technically be posted on websites totally unrelated to that of Mr Jarecki and SHOULD attached the the Ralph Nader Radio Hour site … as encouragement for others.

It would be great PR to induce 1st amendment squabbles with the likes of Facebook, Twitter and the myriad other “social media” platforms.

  3. Afdal Shahanshah says:

Has Ralph ever considered that maybe that reason normal people don’t care about what the New York Times has to say is because they lie and mislead all the time? Maybe it’s because they peddle hoaxes like the Gulf of Tonkin Incident, Weapons of Mass Destruction, and Russian Interference? Maybe when Trump calls them “fake news”, it actually lands because it’s accurate? Get some better news sources Ralph, WashPo and NYT are national security state propaganda rags. Good grief, the first guest this week was straight out of some boutique activist Indivisible rally. I let out a hearty laugh at the Michele Obama VP suggestion–what part of Hillary’s failure and Obama’s legacy of deceit and corruption do these professional Democrats not understand? Along with a right-winger who has obvious dementia (Biden), that’s pretty much a guaranteed way to get Trump re-elected.

    • Mark Hughes says:

Yep. The NYT also fired Chris Hedges for telling the truth about the Iraq War, and also dragged their feet on the Tara Reade allegations until they couldn’t be ignored anymore. Wonder when Bezos will buy that rag too?

  4. Don Klepack says:

Eugene Jarecki said something that none of your guests has ever said on your program to people like me that criticize their point off view on Trump as a “Trump Defender”. Most or all of your prior guests states we are “Trump Supporters”. Personally I do not Support Trump and will never ever vote for him but I do Defend him. With regard to the clock I agree that if Trump mitigation measures been implemented one week earlier, 1000’s of deaths would have been avoided but not 53,824. Governors who set 1000s of Covid 19 positive patience to Nursing Homes that died is not Trumps fault and Dr Birx estimates 25% of the actual death rate could be inflated. I appreciate Mr Jarecki fair and non partisan coverage of this serious topic.

  5. Tara L Carreon says:

Eugene Jarecki, in his “Trump Death Clock” article, referenced an April 11, 2020 article in the New York Times, entitled “He Could Have Seen What Was Coming: Behind Trump’s Failure on the Virus,” in which the authors state: “Unfolding as it did in the wake of his impeachment by the House and in the midst of his Senate trial, Mr. Trump’s response was colored by his suspicion of and disdain for what he viewed as the “Deep State” — the very people in his government whose expertise and long experience might have guided him more quickly toward steps that would slow the virus, and likely save lives.”

I’m not sure how much a Democratic-party public that has been steeped in Russia-gate conspiracy theories for over three years can require a President who has been the object of that long-running irrational conspiracy to listen to their counsel when it comes to taking immediate action on a global pandemic that is itself steeped in conspiracy theories, and which many have come to know is real only because people are dropping dead right in front of us. For these people who have exhibited such confusion about reality to suddenly stand up and say to the President, “You should have known the truth at the very beginning!” is plainly hypocritical.

Then, on the other side, are the Trump Republicans who can’t tell the difference between what is real and what is not real when it comes to their own biases, either.

The Buddha told a story once: “There was a man who got shot with a poisoned arrow, and when his friends came to take the arrow out, the injured man said, ‘No, no, you can’t take it out until I know who was the man who shot the arrow, what caste he was from.’ That man will die.”

Our collective karma has brought us all to this unfortunate place where there is hardly anyone who can tell the difference between what is real and what is not real, due to all the purveyors of lies. So what other conclusion can we come to than that “these people will die”?

  6. David Coles says:

I value the U.S. Postal Service and hope that it survives and thrives long into the future. That said, some of the criticism seems valid to me. Why should the USPS undercut UPS/FedEx on parcel shipping rates? It functions as a subsidy to amazon, which is destroying mom-and-pop, in-person retail and the vitality of Main Streets all over the country. Trump’s critique of this giveaway may be motivated by his disdain for Jeff Bezos and the Washington Post, but it still has merit.

Also, I do not think we should mourn the steady decline of mail volume. Mountains of unwanted junk mail go straight into the waste bin, and it comes at a giant environmental cost. The shift toward email should be welcomed and consumer protections against unwanted junk mail should be beefed up. If the USPS has to reduce service to five or four days a week, so be it.

  7. Daniel says:

Trump Death Clock: I hear you trying to make the argument that this number is a conservative estimate. I do not hear you even attempting to argue that the number represents an objective truth. What you have is a number loosely based on an opinion. This is just more propaganda. More noise in a conversation which is already flooded with noise, and woefully short on information.
